Like many histories of this era, the author addresses early exploration and settlement of the area, the first County Court, the various Indian wars, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction period. Mr. Waddell also devotes an entire chapter to the Scotch-Irish, who were the earliest settlers; and up to the time of the Revolution, very few persons of any other ethnic group came to live in the county. For the historian, this is an informative and descriptive account of early Augusta County; for the genealogist, the narrative provides a wealth of biographical and genealogical sketches of early families. Some of the families discussed include: Adams, Alexander, Anderson, Baldwin, Baxter, Bell, Blackburn, Bowyer, Breckenridge, Brown, Cameron, Campbell, Christian, Craig, Crawford, Cummings, Cunningham, Doak, Fleming, Floyd, Gamble, Graham, Hamilton, Harrison, Hays, Jones, Koiner, Lewis, Lyle, McClanahan, McDowell, McKee, Mathews, Moffett, Moore, Nelson, Poage, Preston, Smith, Stuart, Tate, Trimble, Waddell, and Wilson.

Book #: J-W1009
ISBN: 9781596410091

SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, VIRGINIA: A history of the County of Isle of Wight, Virginia, during the seventeenth century, including abstracts of the county records. John Bennett Boddie. Paperback, (1938), repr. 2012, Illus., Index, 779 pp.

This work contains a broad, comprehensive, early history of Wight County, Virginia, and its early white settlers, and native inhabitants. In addition, where there were gaps in the Virginia papers, newspapers from nearby states were scanned for Virginia material. In selecting items to abstract, Dr. Headley looked especially for those that gave at least two pieces of genealogical data: age and place of residence, for example, date of death and names of executors, or name of spouse and place of residence.

The data provided came from marriage notices, death notices, estate sales and settlements, advertisements for runaways–usually servants, apprentices, slaves, or deserters–and court cases. Information furnished in the abstracts varies from item to item, of course. Marriage notices, death notices, and estate settlements usually provide details on next of kin, occupation, and place of residence, while notices for runaways tend to be the juiciest of all. They can provide minute descriptions down to the manner of wearing the hair, tattoos, personality, and clothing; and they sometimes give place of birth, age, date imported, name of ship on which imported, occupation, and suspected destination.

But the chief thing is that this work draws together all genealogical data in 18th-century Virginia newspapers–in itself a stupendous achievement. Thanks to Dr. Headley’s labors, we now have abstracts of approximately 10,000 items of a genealogical nature found in 18th-century Virginia papers, and an index to an additional 10,000 persons mentioned in the notices. If you’ve hit a dead-end in your Virginia research, this may be the way out.

Book #: 2653-C
ISBN: 9780806311999

Wills of Richmond County, Virginia, 1699-1800. Robert K. Although created eight years before the turn of the century, Richmond County wills are extant only from 1699, but the compiler of this useful work has bridged the gap by substituting information from Order Books, 1692-1699, thereby extending the possibilities for genealogical enquiry. The entries, which consist mainly of abstracts of wills and inventories and refer to about 8,000 persons, are arranged throughout the work in chronological order. Each will abstract contains the name of the testator, often his parish of residence, the date the will was written and the date it was proved, the names of legatees, executors and witnesses, and a variety of other matter supplied by the compiler himself from independent sources. (A knowledge of the history of the Episcopal Church of Virginia, it should be pointed out, is essential to the genealogist since, prior to civil registration, the Church was the only body authorized by statute to collect and preserve vital statistics. The early parish records, therefore, are indispensable for research in Virginia genealogy.) Compiled from parish records and vestry records, from moldy official documents, family records, and tombstone inscriptions, and from records in Lambeth Palace, London, Meade's narrative focuses on the history of the early Virginia parishes and provides details concerning the origins of the parishes, the drawing of parish lines, and the lives of the ministers and selected church members. Each chapter of the work also contains family histories and extensive lists of vestrymen, communicants, justices, and prominent figures. An appendix of 100 pages contains several interesting historical documents as well as lists of ministers and vestrymen of St. Stephen's and Wicomico Parishes, Northumberland County, and additional family histories. The Index, prepared by Jennings C. Wise, is a guide to 7,000 proper names as well as a digest of important facts recorded in the book.

Book #: 3841-C
