Elizabeth City County was one of the early counties of Virginia. The City of Hampton, which now incorporates the land mass of Elizabeth City County, is considered the oldest, continuous, English-speaking settlement in the United States, dating to 1610. These abstracts are taken from the original wills, not the recorded wills. There are five volumes of wills housed in the Hampton Circuit Courthouse in Hampton, Virginia. These documents have been preserved and are available to the public. As an aid to the African American genealogist, a list of transfer of slaves by will has been included. The abstracts are in the simplest form and include all names, witnesses, executors, date written, and date recorded. A full-name index is also included. This is a must have for any researcher interested in this county.
