This two-volume set, as the title indicates, outlines the formation and history of the three California Central Coast counties of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura. Volume I is essentially a narrative account of each county from their aboriginal beginnings through the 19th Century, and is organized around standard institutional themes, such as early settlers and settlements; local government; politics; courts; churches and the religious establishment; education and schools; travel and transportation; growth and development; industry, including ranching, agriculture, oil, and mining; newspapers, and the professions. Volume II devotes its 640 pages to genealogies, biographical sketches and individual photographs of many county residents and pioneers. The genealogical and biographical sketches vary in length, but most are from one to four pages long. Most of the individual sketches include a narrative of the person's life, including births, deaths, marriages, children, profession, religious affiliations, and accomplishments. Some also include life narratives of children.
