History of Seymour, Connecticut, with Biographies and Genealogies. W. C. Sharpe. Paperback, (1879), repr. 2011, Illus., Indices, 271 pp.

In the summer of 1876 several historical sketches were published in the SEYMOUR RECORD, which was later made up in book form, with the intention of making only a small pamphlet. From that beginning, the following work has grown to this remarkable book. A comprehensive index provides the researcher with the ability to locate any person or subject documented within the text. This history begins with the date of 1633 and documents events to the late 1800s. The author graciously acknowledges, by name and title, the various sources and references from which he gathered his information, including Savage's Dictionary of the Early Settlers, Dwight's Travels, Lambert's History of New Haven Colony, Trumbull's History of Connecticut, Barber's Connecticut Historical Collections, Colonial Records of Connecticut, Peters' History of Connecticut, Cothren's History of Woodbury, and Orcutt's History of Wolcott. However, the major part of the work was compiled from the records of the towns of Derby and Seymour, school district and society records, old manuscripts, family records and the recollections of elderly residents. A complete section of the work is devoted to biographies and genealogies. Some of the surnames referenced in the book include Atwood, Baldwin, Bassett, Beach, Beecher, Booth, Botsford, Bradley, Broadwell, Candee, Canfield, Chatfield, Church, Clark, Curtiss, Davis, Durand, Ellis, Fairchild, French, Gillette, Hawkins, Hickox, Hitchcock, Holbrook, Hotchkiss, Hull, Hurd, Johnson, Kinney, Lounsbury, Lum, Moulthrop., Osborn, Peck, Perry, Riggs, Sanford, Sharpe, Smith, Sperry, Steele, Stoddard, Tomlinson, Tucker, Upson, Wheeler, and Wooster.
